Media Literacy Lesson

In this crazy era of not just a LOT of news, but of course, misinformation as well, I'd like to share a real-life lesson. My father-in-law sent a family group text with the info (screenshots attached). Read the medialit 1 and 2 please.

   

Read them? Ok...I showed them to 4th group and asked them to read it. Immediately, many started taking deep breaths, "checking" if they had it. Then I showed the other message, and a lot of them got thirsty right away! I think a good lesson would be to discuss how to read a message like this, break down the fallacies, how to respond to these messages, and have them write a message back to a friend using https://ifaketextmessage.com.

After you read Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor The Woman Who Loved Reptiles by Patricia Valdez and illustrated by Felicita Salas, make your own “dragon” and insects for it to "eat" nom nom nom! On the back, write summaries, notes, or facts! 

Also included, a quick extension activity to help students discuss rumors versus the truth! 

End of Year Make a Summer Reading List Idea

As we're wrapping up the year, I made a little Youtube book trailier playlist and a bookmark for students to take notes on what books to read. I added a variety of Monarch titles from the 2019 and 2020 lists, along with some longer chapter books. This is geared to my K-2, who have a wide variety of reading levels!

I printed them on orange cardstock and cut them into 4ths. Please make your own copy and use as you need! 

Roll and Cite

Looking for a fun game to end the year?

Grab a die (or 2), any book, and play Roll and Cite!

Students roll the die, look at the number and find the title or copyright. They can either keep a written record or simply discuss it with a partner. Happy Citing! =)

Happy Pi Day!

I wanted to incorporate pi day and note taking in the library, and decided to adapt a history.com via Newsela article and add Cornell notes (lite) for students to start writing notes in that style.
